Gigondas is a tiny hamlet of 700 inhabitants, nestled at the foothills that stretch into the jagged limestone peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range. The site was originally established as a Roman military rest camp and named Jaconditas or "Happy Town".

Roman colonization led to the cultivation of vines in the Rhône Valley, and was especially prominent around the town of Orange in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Vacqueyras, Vacqueiras in Provençal, is derived from the Latin Vallea Quadreria, which means "valley of rocks."
