The 2010 Vin Jaune is rock star stuff made from 100% Savagnin that saw a short maceration followed by 6 years (and three months) in older barrels. A sherry-like nose of toasted nuts, wood smoke, cheese rind, and beautiful golden fruits all flow to a medium-bodied Vin Jaune that packs plenty of oomph and acidity as well as fruit. It makes you salivate and will be a great aperitif.

Aromatics of cherries, blackberries, and plums meld with accents of pepper and earth on the nose. A sip delivers flavors of black cherry, plum, and blackberry that flow into highlights of spice, smoked meat, and minerals. A food-friendly acidity, plush tannins, and vibrant flavors make this wine a good match for gourmet sausages.

Blackberry, currant, and dark cherry aromas mingle with traces of dark chocolate, anise, and spice on the nose. Flavors of cherries, bramble fruits, and plums interweave with nuances of white pepper, cocoa, and anise on the palate. Smooth and dark, with ample fruit and mellowed tannins, fans of supple Rhone blends ought to try this bottle.

Damodes is at the top of the hill on the border with Vosne-Romanee, where the Boisset family owns 2.27 acres of vines planted in the mid 1980's. They present it with the extravagant oak scent of a grand cru, and the wine has the red fruit intensity to sustain its vinous tension and generous complexity long after the toast and smoke is gone. The finish lasts for minutes, the wine needing five years or more to show its best.

Beautifully crafted, rich, smooth and supple, with a pretty array of rich black cherry, plum and raspberry fruit. Deftly balanced and nuanced, ending with subtle spice accents and fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2022. From California.—J.L

Although the wine is labeled a Vineyard Designate, it’s a blend of multimple vineyards. Dry, fairly full-bodied and tannic, it has complex cherry, currant, licorice and sandalwood flavors.
