Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Les Charmes” Reviews

Score: 87 | April 15, 2013 | Burghound.com
Here too there is a discreet hint of wood framing the more elegant and more complex ripe and dark berry fruit suffused nose. There is a lovely mouth feel to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that don't quite have the same phenolic ripeness of the villages though the supporting tannins are certainly finer. There is also a noticeable touch of warmth on otherwise clean and agreeably dry if mildly astringent finish. In sum, this is more refined and a bit more complex but the Chardannes is better balanced and pound for pound a better wine.

Infused with a limestone tautness, this red exudes cherry, mineral and spice flavors on an athletic frame. Licorice and vanilla accents grace the lingering finish, along with a sweet black cherry note. Almost seamless now, this should only get better. Shows great tension and interplay of the elements. Best from 2015 through 2032.

Year's Best Burgundy (Oct 2013). Cherry-rich and cushioned with full, meaty fruit, this feels round and complete. The floral notes suggest some of the complexity that may develop with bottle age.

Rich, laced with black cherry, bitter chocolate and earth flavors, this red turns firm and lean by the finish. Just a little dry on balance overall.

This is rich, complex and full of ripe fruit. A firm structure underlies the richness, lending concentration and density. The fruit is still reticent and will show more generously in another year. Age for five years.

This is noticeably more refined than the Chardannes though compositionally, there is a strong similarity between the two aromatic profiles. Likewise, the supporting tannins are much finer here and not surprisingly, so is the mouth feel of the appealingly voluminous medium-bodied flavors on the firm and dusty finish. Lovely if not genuinely stunning.

A fragrant and concentrated 2009, this wine is full and rich, its texture more dense satin than Chambolle’s airy silk. The cherry flavors run deep and the tannins are broad and supple, with hints of earthy funk in the aroma adding complexity to the fruit. A fine expression of the vintage.
