Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Les Charmes” Reviews

Score: 88 | April 1, 2014 | Wine & Spirits
Supple, silky and fat in its ripeness of fruit, this is slightly raisined in the aroma and touches on butterscotch sweetness in the flavor. While it sits heavy in the middle, the finish is long and fragrant. Give this time to meld.

Here too there is a discreet hint of wood framing the more elegant and more complex ripe and dark berry fruit suffused nose. There is a lovely mouth feel to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that don't quite have the same phenolic ripeness of the villages though the supporting tannins are certainly finer. There is also a noticeable touch of warmth on otherwise clean and agreeably dry if mildly astringent finish. In sum, this is more refined and a bit more complex but the Chardannes is better balanced and pound for pound a better wine.

Rich, laced with black cherry, bitter chocolate and earth flavors, this red turns firm and lean by the finish. Just a little dry on balance overall.

A fragrant and concentrated 2009, this wine is full and rich, its texture more dense satin than Chambolle’s airy silk. The cherry flavors run deep and the tannins are broad and supple, with hints of earthy funk in the aroma adding complexity to the fruit. A fine expression of the vintage.
