Gevrey-Chambertin “Les Evocelles” Reviews

Score: 89-92 | January 10, 2024 | Burghound

This is also agreeably airy with spicier aromas of pepper and floral-suffused black cherry and a vague hint of the sauvage. Like the La Justice the middleweight flavors possess a refined texture as well as notably more minerality that adds a sense of lift to the dusty, serious, compact and chiseled finish where a touch of austerity slowly emerges. This is excellent for its level and a wine that should repay up to a decade of keeping.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has an attractive nose with white pepper and subtle Provençal herbs aromas elevating this above the Village. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, well balanced with a slight citric note towards the finish. This has a bit of swagger, and it should drink well once in bottle for the next decade.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunch. It has a rather broody bouquet, a little introverted at the moment, with dark berry fruit, forest floor and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied, the whole bunch defining the entry, a little stemmy but with decent depth and plenty of freshness on the spicy finish. One of the best Gevrey’s from the Domaine this year.

A notably floral nose displays a wonderfully fresh and cool mélange of red pinot fruit, wet stone, earth and a hint of herbal tea.
There is excellent intensity to the chiseled, intense and overtly saline medium-bodied flavors that display ample minerality on
the clean, focused and lingering finale. This not necessarily finer than the La Justice but there is more here.

Bright medium red. Reticent, musky nose offers scents of red berries, coffee and animal fur. At once sweet and brisk in the mouth, with a mineral component lifting the flavors of raspberry and rose petal. Tight, nicely delineated premier cru with a juicy, long, tactile finish leaving saline traces behind on the palate. There's barely six inches of soil here over rock, according to Vincent. A superb village wine in the making.

Dark red cherry, plum, violet, new leather and spice all blossom in the 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles. A wine of superior density, the Evocelles stands out for its pliant, expressive personality and pure depth. The 2012 is broad, creamy and expansi

Outstanding. This is exceptionally fresh, cool and restrained with an absolutely lovely mélange of various red berry fruit aromas that are liberally laced with mineral and sauvage hints. There is good richness but also fine precision to the mineral-driven, delicious and impressively complex flavors that possess plenty of verve and first-rate persistence for a villages level wine. This is stunningly good for what it is and highly recommended.

The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles bursts onto the palate with expressive dark fruit. This is an especially round, generous style of Gevrey. Slightly sauvage notes come through on the finish, but there is more than enough fruit to balance some of the wine’s wilder leanings. Vincent used 50% whole clusters here. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

A cooler if not necessarily more refined nose speaks of airy scents that included high-toned red pinot fruit, floral and stone nuances with undertones of warm earth and iron. There is a really attractive sense of energy and even more minerality on the precise, dusty, focused and impressively intense medium weight flavors that possess outstanding complexity and terrific length. This is a knockout for its level.

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles is elegant, sleek and refined. It shows wonderful nuance and detail in its aromas and flavors, not to mention considerable class. The vines here are 45 years old. The percentage of whole clusters was 30% here and new oak was 40%. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2029. Biodynamic farming and non-interventionalist winemaking are at the heart of the approach at Domaine de la Vougeraie. The 2009s saw roughly a 25 days of maceration (including a week of cold soak) with one punch down a day. Once in barrel racking was kept to a bare minimum. A number of wines were bottled in late 2010 and early 2011. I tasted these wines with winemaker Pierre Vincent in March 2011.

Tasted out of the barrel at the Domaine. This is a special cuvee from a tiny parcel planted in 2002 at a phenomenal 36,000 vines per hectare. The wine includes 80% whole bunches and was matured in two year-old barrels. It has a slightly reductive nose that is difficult to assess at the moment. The palate is very intense with black cherry, black olive, a touch of blueberry and even a hint of marmalade from the sweetness. Good acidity, good crispness and precision towards the intense finish. Delicate, floral raspberry nose. Bright and fresh, with lively acidity, and light tannins to give it grip and balance. Drink 2012-2018

(from vines on the Brochon side) 30% whole clusters. A high-toned red berry fruit nose that includes notes of raspberry and cranberry are liberally sprinkled with wet stone notes that introduce detailed, intense and lively middle weight flavors where more minerality can be found on the balanced, pure and harmonious finish. This is another really lovely villages and absolutely worth a look. 2016+
