Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

Score: 91 | December 27, 2023 | James Suckling

Aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, red licorice and nut shell. Textured and chalky with grainy tannins. Medium to full body. Dry and a little chewy at the end. Drink or hold.

This concentrated wine is firm in structure and not too full bodied, deep in black cherries, cranberries and black currants. It's an old school, agile Cabernet that needs time to be fully enjoyable with a lamb chop or skirt steak. Best from 2027. - Jim Gordon

This has lots of steeped plum, warm cassis and mulled blackberry flavors that knit together while flashes of anise, sassafras and black tea swirl around. There's a great mineral underpinning on the finish, while the fruit keeps the upper hands. Best from 2022 through 2036. -JM

A mix of menthol, sassafras and bay leaf notes lead off, then slowly meld into the core of gently mulled plum and blackberry flavors. Racy acidity teams with strident tannins to drive the finish, showing energy and cut. Impressive. Best from 2022 through 2034. — JM

This is a thick, herbal red wine that’s tannic in bittersweet tobacco, tomato leaf, black pepper and gunpowder elements, rounded by ripe rich blackberry fruit.

This is a voluptuous, sexy cabernet from a mountain appellation better known for powerful, often austere wines. It comes from a site at the top of Spring Mountain, where the vines face southwest. The supple tannins meld fruity dark chocolate with raspberry and cherry-skin flavor. What ties the wine to Spring Mountain is the detail in the tannins, the earthy spice that lasts.
