A young, structured Pinot Noir exuding tart red cherry and pomegranate, clearly grown in a cool climate in a cool year with an undertone of brushy herbes de Provence. The finish continues the theme of tartness and acidity, a willing partner for something unexpected like oysters or bacon-wrapped dates.

Zesty and vibrant with raspberry and smoky dried herb aromas, layered with flavors of boysenberry, grilled mint and cracked pepper.

Supple, silky and fat in its ripeness of fruit, this is slightly raisined in the aroma and touches on butterscotch sweetness in the flavor. While it sits heavy in the middle, the finish is long and fragrant. Give this time to meld.

The grapes are from an old vineyard on the warmer eastern side of Russian River Valley, in the Mayacamas foothills. The wine is exceptionally ripe, with blackberries veering into prunes and raisins. The tannins are wonderfully smooth and complex. Drink it now with barbecue.

Cellar Selection. The Sebastopol Hills may someday be an appellation. This area of the southern valley lies open to maritime influences, making it cool. This polished Pinot shows its terroir in the brisk acidity, minerality and earthy fruit notes of pomegranates and heirloom tomatoes that accompany riper, sweeter raspberry and cherry flavors. A few years in the cellar should add traction.

This Zin is like a cuddly old pussycat. It purrs in your lap, yet there’s a lot of personality. The Old Vines designation refers to the sourcing of the grapes from pre-Prohibition vineyards. That may or may not account for the unusual softness and approachability. But what’s certain is that this Zinfandel is delicious in black cherries, raisins, olive tapenade, black pepper and smoky oak.

The Middle Reach is an informal name for the warmer, northern part of the valley that should have its own appellation. In this wine, you’ll find elaborate apricot, tangerine, Meyer lemon and peach flavors, alongside brisk acidity and oak influences. It’s a gorgeous wine for drinking soon.

De Loach’s OFS bottling is a barrel selection of the winery’s extensive vineyard holdings. This 2011 is dry, balanced in acidity and tannins and quite impressive for the way the ripe red fruits and berries hold back, tantalizing with hints of ripeness yet receding into dryness.
