When we dig a well for water, we mimic the action of a vine, which may be why a wine like this recalls the depths of a well in its rooty, wild mushroom and earth scents. That scent is atavistic, or, as one taster suggested, animalistic; wild and gamey, in any case. Its fruit has a clover honey edge, riding between cleanness and the hayloft above a stable. A Burgundy to bring out your own inner animal.

Delicate in its rose petal perfume that parallels the wine's sweet earthiness, this is, in fact, quite solidly built, though all its heft seems hidden beneath the surface. A contrast of deep and somber structure with fresh-cut cherry fruit, this has the substance and length of flavor to benefit from long aging.

Buena Vista is the state's oldest premium winery, and they have focused on using high-quality fruit from the region during their century-and-a-half-plus existence; an elegant ruby color; the nose is dominated by black cherry, red berry notes and spice; the palate has plenty of rich fruit; a refreshing, balanced and long finish.

The tannins are already finely integrated into the rich, ripe fruit. It has a smoky character along with a note of wood spice, and the black plum fruit serves as a juicy underlay. Given its weight and structure, this should for age five years at least.

Lush and ripe with deep plum and cassis; dense, balanced and generous with a long finish; 61% Sonoma, 39% Napa fruit

A rich, plummy Beaune, this is filled with juicy sweetness in the middle, restricted by smoky tannins in the end. Those coffee-scented tannins remain tender and gentle, creating a mouthwatering finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.

A hint of toast introduces this lemon- and apple-infused white. Fresh and racy, with a vibrant structure and lingering lemon and apple aftertaste. Best from 2013 through 2020. 995 cases made. –BS
