The 2010 Vin Jaune is rock star stuff made from 100% Savagnin that saw a short maceration followed by 6 years (and three months) in older barrels. A sherry-like nose of toasted nuts, wood smoke, cheese rind, and beautiful golden fruits all flow to a medium-bodied Vin Jaune that packs plenty of oomph and acidity as well as fruit. It makes you salivate and will be a great aperitif.

Beautifully crafted, rich, smooth and supple, with a pretty array of rich black cherry, plum and raspberry fruit. Deftly balanced and nuanced, ending with subtle spice accents and fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2022. From California.—J.L

Aromas and flavors of terracotta, walnuts and ripe fruits follow through to a full body, with soft tannins and a round-textured finish. Lovely mouthfeel in this early-drinking cab.

Slightly lifted nose with mint, dried-flower and berry character. Full to medium body with firm, silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. I really like the refined austerity to this.

A solid wine with currants, mint and berry character. Medium to full body, soft tannins and a juicy finish. Opens on the palate with air. Drink or hold.

Bright medium ruby. Cassis, licorice and crushed rock on the nose, lifted by a violet topnote. Suave and varietally accurate, with good inner-mouth energy and lift to the dark berry and fresh herb flavors. Finishes with serious tannins and lingering sweet berry fruit. Raymond is now under the Boisset Family Estates umbrella following its purchase by Jean-Charles Boisset in August of 2009. Boisset, who also has a major presence in Burgundy, told me he looks for refined wines--"almost in a pinot style." Philippe Melka is in charge of winemaking here.

The JCB 2010 No. 3 Red Wine is a blend of French and California Pinot Noir. The color is dark garnet, and the nose is spicy and smoky displaying notions of underbrush and red cherries. Dominated by Pinot Noir fruit characteristics, it is round, pure and velvety textured with loads of kirsch, plums and black cherries. This medium to full-bodied, elegant yet authoritatively styled effort merits serious attention. It can be drunk over the next 5-6 years.

Generous, featuring ripe and fleshy plum, black cherry, wild berry, raspberry and anise notes, with an array of flavors framed and supported by firm, ripe tannins. Well-proportioned, clean and vibrant, delivering a long, saturated finish. Drink now through 2024.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon JCB No. 10 reveals a strikingly pure, black currant-scented nose with lots of high quality wood in the background, and good framework, structure and intensity. Young and exuberant, it shows lots of upside potential, but it is currently closed with high tannins as well as wood. However, there is a lot of impressive raw materials evident.
