Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Reviews

Score: 96 | February 1, 2023 | TimAtkin.com

This is the oldest contract chez Boisset, which has been in place since 2002. They only make 900 bottles, but it's worth trying to get your hands on one. The nose starts with violets and balsamic before the palate follows with peak-season black cherries. This is vigorous and super-charged, so don't plan on opening it for the first eight or nine years.

Cask sample. Meaty, orange-peel nose with lots of edge and energy. Like essence of Morey. Really exciting but with a flourish rather than concentration. Great balance and refinement as well as depth. So well done! Oddly appealing already but certainly not simple.

Beautiful violet and black-cherry nose. A gentle giant that has a radical mineral and tannin structure, but also wonderful elegance, the finishing washing over you in waves that echo down the valleys. Great aging potential. Drink or hold.

Grégory Patriat makes the wines at this negociant firm, and a number of his 2015s are remarkable, including this selection from a grand cru on the Gevrey side of Morey-St-Denis. Treated to 100 percent new oak, this vintage took it in and returned a wine with floral refinement, the oak turning its power toward elegance. The fruit reaches a near-tropical ripeness, edged in herbal notes, somehow feeling zesty and cool. The contrast is fascinating, sustained over the course of several days, predicting a complex evolution ahead.

Super-dark and intense but also very pure and vibrant. There is deep, brooding power in the background, which shows what this wine is capable of when everything goes right. This needs a lot of time to give its best, but the balance is so beautiful that you could drink it on release.

Exotic five spice notes with oak and red fruit mingling on the exotic palate. Very primary now but will develop beautifully. No rush.

Aromas of smoked meat and spice give way to black cherry, earth and stony mineral flavors in this dense, powerful red. The tannins are dominant for now, but there is freshness and a long, complex finish that reveals promise for the future.

Very youthful and underdeveloped, but has all the components of a great wine. Richly fruited, very polished oak, fine overall balance and, above all, beautiful silky tannins. Very long on the finish. A keeper.

Smudgy cherry red. Deliciously aromatic, fragrant with red fruit, a light floral note and the complexity of oak spice, though the oak is very well hidden behind the fruit. Firm but powder-fine tannins. Refined texture, needing time to take on more flesh but everything in place for the future.
