van der Kamp Vineyard Pinot Noir Reviews

Score: 91 | November 1, 2018 | Wine Enthusiast

Tart and tangy, with a high-strung streak of acidity that’s fresh and focused, this wine traffics in forest pine, strawberry and a lasting linger of orange rind.

Exotic Asian spices and moody, brambly black fruit play at the center of this full-bodied vineyard-designate from a high-elevation site. Citrus, fresh-grated nutmeg and bright acidity make for a savory yet completely succulent experience that’ll remain memorable long after the bottle is gone. Editors’ Choice. —V.B.

Enticing, with zesty blackberry and wild berry scents, this offers a mix of crushed rock and lavender, finishing with hint of smoky, toasty oak. Drink now through 2020. 201 cases made. –JL

This wine is so silky, it glides over the palate like a cool stream. Then the flavors kick in-- fabulously rich in raspberry and cherry jam, vanilla and spicy sandalwood, brightened by crisp acidity. The verdict: A beautiful Pinot Noir, lush and fine, for drinking over the next four years, especially with something that includes mushrooms.

Bright ruby-red. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes red berry liqueur, incense and star anise, with a strong vanilla overtone. Lush and supple in texture, with a slight jamminess to its raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors. Open-knit and emphatically fruity, finishing with very good energy and spicy persistence.

Cellar Selection. An interesting Pinot Noir, showing a bit of heat, but whose flavors are taut and complex. The usual cherries and cola you find in almost all California Pinot Noirs are grounded with meaty notes, like grilled hamburger, finished with a splash of tamari. Such are the tannins and acids that the wine should age gracefully for a good eight years, but you can drink it now.
