Score: 94 | May 21, 2020 |

Coming from three sites in Sonoma (Thornton, Martaella, and Hawk Hill) and aged 15 months in 25% new French oak, the 2017 Chardonnay Private Reserve is a rocking effort with classy sautéed stone fruits, brioche, and honeysuckle aromas and flavors as well as medium to full body, a rich, textured mouthfeel, good acidity, and a great finish. Very well done, this is a classic Chardonnay all the way. Drink this beauty any time over the coming 5-7 years

Score: 94 | May 21, 2020 |

The lightest colored Pinot Noir in the lineup, the 2017 Pinot Noir Ida's Selection comes all from the Sonoma Coast (the Swicegood and Azaya Vineyard) and spent 10 months in 25% new French oak. It offers a translucent ruby hue as well as cool-climate notes of wild strawberries, rose petals, spice, and dried flowers. Ethereal, elegant, and seamless on the palate, it has a wonderful sense of purity and balance that keeps you coming back to the glass. It's not the richest wine in the lineup, yet the balance is brilliant. I'd happily drink bottles any time over the coming decade or more.

Score: 92+ | May 21, 2020 |

The flagship 2018 Pinot Noir Private Reserve comes from a handful of sites in Sonoma County and spent 15 months in 30% new French oak. This expressive, complex effort offers loads of spiced red and blackberry fruit tones as well as bay leaf, sagebrush, and flowery incense aromatics. Medium-bodied, tight and slightly streamlined, it's beautifully balanced and has good acidity and tannins, solid mid-palate depth, and an outstanding finish. It's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and should have a solid evolution over the following decade.

Score: 91+ | May 21, 2020 |

Coming from the Monte Rosso and Lesdon Terraces vineyards in the Sonoma Mountain AVA, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain checks in as 100% Cabernet that spent 20 months in 30% new French oak. A big, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon, it sports a deep purple hue to go with top-notch cassis and blueberry fruit as well as notes of spice box, cedar, and dried herbs. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it has a savory, structured feel on the palate and should evolve for 10-15 years. It will be best with 2-3 years of bottle age.

Score: 91 | May 21, 2020 |

Based on 33% Cabernet Sauvignon,19% Petite Sirah, 15% Syrah, and the rest Grenache, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre, Merlot, and Mission, the 2018 The Sheriff Of Buena Vista spent 10 months in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak. It's a wonderfully fruit-forward, almost Zinfandel-like red with perfumed blackberry and kirsch fruits, lots of spice, brambly herbs, and floral notes, medium-bodied richness, and a silky, polished, elegant texture. It's undeniably delicious and will drink well for 4-6 years at a minimum.

Score: 91 | May 21, 2020 |

The 2017 Pinot Noir Bela's Selection is the Russian River Valley release in the lineup, and it spent 14 months in 50% new French oak, a fair amount more than the other Pinot Noirs here. It handles it nicely, though, and offers up lots of blackberry and mulberry fruits as well as medium-bodied richness, a bright line of acidity, ripe tannins, and classic Pinot Noir spice and dried flower-like aromas and flavors. It's a balanced, elegant Russian River Pinot Noir to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years.

Score: 90 | May 21, 2020 |

All from Carneros, the 2018 Chardonnay Chateau Buena Vista has a solid, balanced, medium-bodied style as well as terrific stone fruits, pineapple, and spice-driven aromatics. It's balanced and has good acidity, followed by a clean, crisp finish.

Score: 90 | May 21, 2020 |

Coming from a mix of Azaya, Sonoma Stage, and Gap's Crown Vineyard, all of which are in the Petaluma Gap AVA, the 2017 Pinot Noir Geza's Selection was destemmed and spent 14 months in 30% new oak. It has a classy, spice-laced bouquet that includes plenty of red and black fruits, violets, dried earth, and a touch of California bay leaf nuances. Nicely textured, medium-bodied, and elegant on the palate, it's a quintessential, classic California Pinot Noir that will evolve for 7-8 years.

A polished Napa Valley Cab from Buena Vista, rich, layered and full-bodied with ripe dark plum, black currant, blackberry, meaty, minty and cedar spice flavours on the palate. Smooth with structured tannins and balanced acidity. Love the long and juicy dark cherry finish.

Seductive in its interaction of oak and fruit, this wine offers delicious richness in its old-vine concentration. With savory notes of toasted pumpkin seeds and spice to cut the luscious texture, it’s a sleek and intense red for spicy braised lamb.

Score: 93 | May 18, 2020 |

Thin-skinned zin grown in rocky, red volcanic soils produced this delicately structured, intensely concentrated wine. It has the complexity that old vines can give, and though it clocks in at 16 percent alcohol, it’s not at all boozy, just luscious and wild. It tastes like fresh fruit—of juicy black cherries, cranberries and red apple skin—even as it tastes completely vinous.

Buena Vista 2018 Pinot Noir (North Coast). Quite complex and intricate in flavor, this full-bodied wine adds savory, herbaceous nuances to a broad and rich plum core. The texture is smooth and plush, giving an expansive mouthfeel and lingering finish.

This is an excellent, spicy and complex wine that balances all its elements to a T. Aromas of nutmeg, vanilla and poached pear meet ripe, juicy pear and apple flavors while good acidity gives them great lift.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Zinfandel Private Reserve has quite a spicy nose with notions of allspice and powdered cinnamon over a core of raspberry pie, blueberry preserves and raisin cake plus a touch of dried flowers. Full-bodied, rich and decadently fruited in the mouth, it has a chewy frame and lively line of freshness, finishing on a spicy note.

The 2013 Syrah The Count’s Selection shows the bacon fat and dense blackberry and cassis fruit of Syrah, with a deep ruby/purple color, a lush medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, supple tannins, and is quite long, layered and rich. It should drink well for at least 10-12 years. It reminds me of a high-class Crozes-Hermitage from France.

The 2013 Proprietary Red The Aristocrat from Napa has a beautiful nose of crème de cassis, licorice and floral notes. It is full-bodied with sweet tannin, a multilayered mouthfeel and impressive texture and length. This is a beauty and, while accessible already, should age effortlessly for 15-20 or more years.

The winery remains committed to French Colombard, honoring its heritage with this wine. Wet stone, apple and lemon distinguish it most, both in terms of aromatics and taste. Crisp and refreshing, it’s a fun wine to begin the night, served chilled and shared.

Editors' Choice

White pepper and matchstick come to the fore aromatically in this crisp white that’s fuller bodied on the palate than one would expect given the aromatics. Apple and pear give a complex, autumnal fruit presence that leads up to a ripe, creamy finish.
