Earthy with a persistence of cola and clove, this wine has a delicate structure that’s soft and rounded within a context of ripe power. Strawberry and orange compote give it a fruity underbelly beneath the savory ripeness.

Lastly, the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Private Reserve (aged 19 months in 68% new French oak) offers an outstanding bouquet of cedarwood, black fruits, currants, and earth. With medium to full body, ripe tannins, and good overall elegance, it’s approachable today yet will benefit from short term cellaring and cruise for 10-15 years.

The 2017 Chardonnay Jovita's saw a native fermentation in barrel followed by 14 months in 35% new French oak. It has a classic bouquet of crushed citrus, toasted oak, white flowers, and hints of minerality as well as a medium to full-bodied, rounded, supple, balanced style on the palate. This is a classic, balanced, beautifully textured Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast that’s well worth seeking out.

In the same ballpark, the 2016 Pinot Noir Bela's comes from the Russian River and spent 12 months in 35% new French oak. More classic sweet red fruits, forest floor, leather, and spicy incense notes all emerge from this complex, medium-bodied effort that has tons of charm. It too should keep nicely for 7-8 years.

Brian Maloney blends this wine from zinfandel grown in the Sonoma and Russian River valleys. It’s zesty, with an iron-oxide undertone to the black fruit. The tannins have the bitter spice of black pepper, and firm up the wine’s round structure. Built for beef.

Aged 13 months in French and Hungarian oak, this Pinot Noir opens us with aromas of cranberry, mushroom, and heather. Its forest-floor nature comes through on the first sip with dried roses, jasmine tea, and white pepper following through through to the finish.

Composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 The Founder is medium garnet-purple in color and beautifully scented of crushed blackberries and blackcurrants with nuances of menthol, lilacs, dark chocolate and cedar chest. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has elegantly played perfumed black fruits, with a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and layered.

Note this is for the 2014 Buena Vista Chateau Buena Vista GRAND RESERVE Cabernet Sauvignon

An underpinning of soft, grippy tannin carries lingering red currant and cranberry flavors in this full-bodied,unabashedly ripe reserve-level wine. Cola and leathery earth notes combine to boost and contrast the fruit, which persists long into the finish.

Rustic compost, wild strawberry and cola spice highlight this medium-bodied, velvety textured wine, buoyed by a linear streak of lively acidity. Leather and smoke accentuate the finish. —V.B.

The 2013 Syrah The Count’s Selection shows the bacon fat and dense blackberry and cassis fruit of Syrah, with a deep ruby/purple color, a lush medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, supple tannins, and is quite long, layered and rich. It should drink well for at least 10-12 years. It reminds me of a high-class Crozes-Hermitage from France.

The 2013 Proprietary Red The Aristocrat from Napa has a beautiful nose of crème de cassis, licorice and floral notes. It is full-bodied with sweet tannin, a multilayered mouthfeel and impressive texture and length. This is a beauty and, while accessible already, should age effortlessly for 15-20 or more years.

The winery remains committed to French Colombard, honoring its heritage with this wine. Wet stone, apple and lemon distinguish it most, both in terms of aromatics and taste. Crisp and refreshing, it’s a fun wine to begin the night, served chilled and shared.

Editors' Choice

White pepper and matchstick come to the fore aromatically in this crisp white that’s fuller bodied on the palate than one would expect given the aromatics. Apple and pear give a complex, autumnal fruit presence that leads up to a ripe, creamy finish.

Screw cap. Great value: full bodied and zesty in style, this is a fresh, crisp Sauvignon with good balance and a long finish, tasting of lime, lemon grass, grapefruit, and green apple
