Private Reserve Zinfandel Reviews

Score: 89 | June 1, 2021 | Wine & Spirits

Scents of brandied cherries lend this wine its warm power, in the mode of Port without the sweetness. The firm tannins have a pleasant greenness, like raspberry leaves, keeping the finish clean. Serve with roast game. -J.G.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Zinfandel Private Reserve has quite a spicy nose with notions of allspice and powdered cinnamon over a core of raspberry pie, blueberry preserves and raisin cake plus a touch of dried flowers. Full-bodied, rich and decadently fruited in the mouth, it has a chewy frame and lively line of freshness, finishing on a spicy note.

Herbaceous and earthy, this playfully ponders the juicy delights of soft, red raspberry and black cherry, the wine somewhat silky on the tongue. It finishes consistently and bright in acidity.

The 2012 Zinfandel Private Reserve exhibits a deeper plum/ruby color, a sweeter, richer core of dark fruits (although the wine is totally dry), a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and impressive purity, texture and length. Spicy, peppery, black cherry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with a hint of spice box are present in this generously endowed, full-bodied Zinfandel to drink over the next 5-7 years.
