Pommard 1er Cru “Les Charmots” Reviews

Score: 93 | February 1, 2023 | Wine & Spirits

From a mid-slope parcel north of the village, this is an impressive négociant wine. Its fraises des bois freshness and sunny briskness gain graphite depths with air, taking on a fruity-inky succulence while still feeling refreshing. This aged 14 months in barrels, 20 percent of them new, and that oak influence shows as a muscular aspect of the wine. Terse, tight and true to its place, this is a cool and lively Pommard.

The wine is full of acidity — crisp and tight. With firm tannins to back up the red-currant fruit, it is going to take time to open up. Then it will become a rich serious wine.

This lean, firmly tannic wine is more about structure that fruit. There is a burnt, chocolate-and-bitter-coffee flavor that gives edge to the palate, while firm tannins enrobe black-cherry fruit. Drink from 2016.
