Châteauneuf du Pape Reviews

Score: 91 | June 24, 2021 | Decanter

From the Boisset family’s estate in the southern Rhône, close to Avignon and overlooking the Durance River, this blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre shows a lucid ruby-garnet in the glass, revealing vivid garrigue scents, fired clay, rose petal, and cherry aromas. Immediately refreshing, with excellent lift courtesy of a wonderful vintage in Châteauneuf, elegant red berry fruits mingle with savoury pops of leather and earth, dried sage and classy cedar spices from aging in 228-litre French oak barrels over an eight-month period. All this is framed by soft, satiny tannins and a lengthy finish punctuated by an almost iron-like crushed stone minerality and blackcurrant nuances. Refined and classically styled.

A generous expression which is not for the faint-hearted! Baked plums and macerated cherries mixed with an indulgent hit of liquorice spice provides a warming embrace.

Delicate aromas of lifted floral, pepper and herbal notes, lead on to Morello cherry and soft spice on the palate.

Blackberry, currant, and dark cherry aromas mingle with traces of dark chocolate, anise, and spice on the nose. Flavors of cherries, bramble fruits, and plums interweave with nuances of white pepper, cocoa, and anise on the palate. Smooth and dark, with ample fruit and mellowed tannins, fans of supple Rhone blends ought to try this bottle.
