The Founders

The Founder

The Founder bottle

The inaugural release of The Founder from Buena Vista Winery celebrates and honors Buena Vista's founder, Count Agoston Haraszthy, and the pioneering role he played in creating the California wine world. The Founder, true to the Count's legacy, is a bold wine with a gold medallion predominantly featuring the Haraszthy family crest adorning the bottle. "The Count of Buena Vista," Agoston Haraszthy was a vivacious pioneer whose love affair with grape-growing started in his homeland of Hungary. Born into the landed nobility in Hungary, Harazsthy grew up amidst famed vineyards and orchards that had been in his family for centuries. Surrounded by tales of intrigue and political exile, The Count immigrated from Europe in 1840 in pursuit of opportunity and freedom in the burgeoning American West. Following the forty-niners in search of gold in the hills of Northern California, Haraszthy sought "purple gold" - the perfect 'terroir' for exceptional wine. He ultimately settled in Sonoma

The Founder is an expressive blend, bringing together Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Charbono harvested from distinguished vineyards across Sonoma Valley. The renowned Monte Rosso Vineyard is the home of the Cabernet Sauvignon while the Malbec is harvested from Sonoma Valleys Bismark and Pickberry vineyards. Both the Petit Verdot and Charbono come from small, pre-Prohibition vineyards planted nearly 80 years ago. The Cabernet, Malbec and Petit Verdot were fermented in closed-top fermenters with extended maceration while the Charbono was fermented in open-top fermenters with hand punch downs. The wine was aged for 20 months in 100% French oak (50% new) for 20 months before being bottled unfiltered.
