Domaine de la Vougeraie Reviews

Score: 93 | November 29, 2014 | Wine Advocate

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Lighter in color, there are plenty of pretty, demure red berry fruits on the nose of the Bonnes-Mares 2011 from Domaine de la Vougeraie: very pure and translating the essence of Pinoté, albeit not the kind of aromatics for someone seeking opulence. The palate is medium-bodied with very well-judged acidity. This just glides across the palate and down the throat in effortless fashion. Bon vin.

There is just enough wood to notice on the ever-so-slightly reduced nose so I would suggest giving this 15 to 20 minutes of air if you’re going to try a bottle in its youth. There is an undercurrent of minerality that adds lift to the delicious, round and supple medium weight flavors that possess good punch and detail on the crisp, dry and clean citrus-infused finish that again offers good persistence if only moderate depth. 88/2016+

This is slightly more aromatically complex with its attractively fresh nose of nut oil, lemon, straw and pear. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that display good cut on the very clean, refreshing and saline finish. This is really quite pretty and should drink well soon after its release. 89/2016+

This has the earthern cool of cave, its bright red cherry flavors shaded toward dark rose and smoky tannins. Quiet rather than flash, this has enough flavor concentration and spicy tannins to develop over the next several years.

Intense and powerful, but as yet unformed, this starts with fruity layers of black cherry skin then hits a wall of tannins. Heady in its peppery scents and closed off behind those tannins, this is formidable, if difficult to read as young wine. For the cellar.

Year's Best White Burgundy. A formal, old-fashioned style of Burgundy, this wine's oak age contributes the scent of hazelnut butter. It's oxidative, with umami mushroom notes and mouthwatering acidity. The flavors will meld with roast salmon.

Best Buy. An ornate, red-fruikted Nuits, this starts out with the dark, barrel spice of oak and brightens into layers of fruit and earthy scents in the finish. Juicy, tight and youhtfully blunt, this will gain from several years in the cellar.

Black and sleek with the dark-roast coffee scent of expensive oak, this wine's graceful fruit and incipient complexity is overtaken up front by that smokiness. But it's the strawberry essence that lasts in the finish, warm and powerful, ready to go the distance in the cellar.

There is just over one hectare (2.47 acres) of pinot noir in this walled vineyard, where some of the vines date back to 1901, the youngest palnted in 1983. Farmed under biodynamics since 2001, it produced a mood-altering wine in this vintage, sparkling with freshness, the brightness of the color itself showing the life in the wine. It surges with energy across the mid-palate, a revelation in fraise de bois flavor. The wine has not issues, just layer upon layer of delicate red fruit and Vougeot earth.

A deft application of wood sets off notes of green apple, lemon zest, floral and spice hints. There is good punch and intensity to the plump and supple middle weight flavors that possess good persistence if only average complexity on the dry, balanced and easy-to-like finish. This should also drink well right away.

Outstanding Top Value. A fresh, cool and ripe nose of red berries that is liberally laced with hints of earth and floral nuances leads to attractively rich, round and delicious flavors that possess an appealing texture on the delicious, serious and detailed finish. This is really very good for what it is and worth considering.

A beautifully perfumed nose of very pretty red currant, pinot, spice and subtle floral scents serve as an elegant intro to the mouth coating middle weight flavors that display a hint of minerality on the delicious and lingering finish where a trace of wood is in evidence. This is nicely balanced if only moderately complex though there is enough underlying material that it may very well succeed in adding depth with time in bottle.

This is also exceptionally fresh, cool and pure with an expressive nose of primarily red berry fruit and discreet notes of kirsch front running the lush and fleshy middle weight flavors that possess good verve and a subtle touch of minerality on the delicious finish. This should be almost immediately accessible yet reward a few years of cellar time too if desired.
Score: 88-90 | January 14, 2013 | Burghound
A deft but not invisible touch of wood sets off fresh aromas of red and blue berry fruit aromas, kirsch, humus and plenty of forest floor nuances. The fleshy and round, even succulent middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality on the mouth coating finish that while delicious lacks the same sense of vibrancy and refreshing acidity.
Score: 88-91 | January 14, 2013 | Burghound
An airy, floral and very spicy array of both red and blue pinot fruit, earth and a hint of the sauvage introduces mineral-tinged middle weight flavors that also possess fine mid-palate concentration before terminating in a dusty, serious and firm finish. This is blessed with ripe tannins and enough underlying material to suggest that 7 to 9 years of cellar time should be amply rewarded.
Score: 89 | January 14, 2013 | Burghound
An intensely earthy nose blends together very fresh aromas of both red and dark berry fruit with hints of underbrush and forest floor. There is good volume to the generous, round and very fleshy middle weight flavors that possess very good depth and excellent length on the balanced finish. This is lovely.
Score: 89-92 | January 14, 2013 | Burghound
Outstanding. This is exceptionally fresh, cool and restrained with an absolutely lovely mélange of various red berry fruit aromas that are liberally laced with mineral and sauvage hints. There is good richness but also fine precision to the mineral-driven, delicious and impressively complex flavors that possess plenty of verve and first-rate persistence for a villages level wine. This is stunningly good for what it is and highly recommended.

Don't miss! This is restrained to the point of being borderline inexpressive though aggressive swirling coaxes notes of highly spiced floral, red currant, black cherry and kirsch to reveal themselves. The mouth feel of the strikingly seductive medium weight plus sized flavors is pure silk and satin as the grain of the tannins is ultra-fine. There is also excellent underlying tension and delineation to the understated and harmonious finish that really fans out on the beautifully well-balanced finish. This is a stunner of a wine that should thoroughly reward long-term cellaring.
